KAYAK/SUP OUTING: Deschutes River from Dillon Falls to Benham Falls

There is a stretch of the Deschutes River right above town that is beautiful, will challenge you while paddling upstream, and has birds and other wildlife to enjoy.
We will meet at the boat launch at Dillon Falls READY TO LAUNCH at 8:30am. Please arrive 15 minutes early for a pre-float meeting. The put-in to this magical section of river is right above Dillon Falls.
Directions: Travel west on Cascade Lakes Highway, then turn left on Forest Road 41 (brown Forest Service sign that states: Deschutes Recreation Area). Drive until you see the turn off for Dillon Falls. At the end of the dirt road, when you reach the river, you will come to a small cement boat launch. This is where you will begin.
Disclaimer: This put in is above a gnarly waterfall. There is plenty of clearance for paddlers feeling comfortable and proficient, but if this is your first time on a board or kayak and you are not sure if you can paddle straight, or navigate working up current, save this one for after more experience!
Putting in here, be aware… Your first direction will be UPSTREAM. Downstream, almost directly, is the falls that you DO NOT want to accidentally go down. But go upstream, and you will find a section of river that meanders past a grassland meadow, lava flows, and on a clear day will give you a view of Mt. Bachelor!
Don’t forget:
Bring a Forest Pass for parking.
Don’t forget your paddle, life jacket, whistle and permit (for boats and boards 10 feet or longer).
Other things to bring: plenty of water, a snack, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, gloves, a towel and dry shoes for afterwards.
Bring a drybag for wallet/keys/phone.
Lunch afterwards for those interested.
Cancelation Notice: Rain/Air Quality of 100 or above will cancel this ride. Look for an update on MeetUp by 7:00am on the day of the float.
