Easy Rider ROAD RIDE: Crooked River Scenic Highway
September 17, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Organizer: Laury Riley
It is possible to ride anywhere from 15 miles to 40 miles on this highway. It is out-and-back so people will ride at their own pace as far as they wish. There will not be any regrouping. There are several starting points, depending on how far you wish to ride.
It will be cooler next Tuesday so we won’t start real early. Much of this route is along the Crooked River and it is quite scenic. There isn’t much car traffic at this time of year on a weekday. There is no bike lane.
For those who wish to carpool or follow me: Please meet at the Cracker Barrel parking lot, ready to depart at 9am.
Everyone else: We will rendezvous at the Crooked River Park, ready to depart at 10am. From there we will organize the cars going to various starting points.
To get to the Crooked River Park: Drive north to Redmond. Turn RIGHT onto Hwy 126 when you see the sign. Drive into Prineville. Turn RIGHT onto Main Street. Drive about 1.2 miles; look for the church on the left, then turn RIGHT into the park. There is a restroom building there. Look for all the cars with bikes. We will discuss the options when we all arrive. I will bring maps.
The 40-mile route will begin from this park.
There is a 24-mile route that begins from another parking spot farther up the highway.
There is a 15-mile route that begins from the Castle Rock Campground.
Please RSVP Yes if you plan to attend, so that you will receive any changes or cancellations. This ride will be cancelled if the conditions are not good as it is a long ways to go. Please check for any Meetup comments before heading out the door, just in case. In case of cancellation the make-up date will be Tues Sept 24.
We will not finish the ride til about 12:30 pm or later (depending on how far you ride), due to the late start and long drive. It is an hour’s drive back to Bend. Plan your afternoon appointments accordingly.
Afterwards we can go to lunch at the Sandwich Factory. It is next to the Good Bike shop at 284 NE 3rd St and caters to bike riders. The menu includes sandwiches, wraps, burgers and salads. Plus beer!
Bella rides are “no-drop” rides and no one will be left behind. In consideration of others, we ask that you choose an ability level that is close to your skills. If you choose to leave the group by going significantly faster or taking a different route, you have an obligation to let the leader know. When you leave the group, you are on your own.
