Adv Beginner MTB Ride – Black Rock Trail in Lava Lands
May 27, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Such a good turnout- we will open up the attendance limit and break into 2 groups and have 2 ride leaders, and 2 sweeps!
This is an Advanced Beginner ride. Susanita and I (Bonnie) are Advanced Intermediate riders but promise to lead this ride at a slower pace, as we would love to help our club’s Advanced Beginners have plenty of rides to choose from this summer. Also we will have just raced the previous day in the Sisters Stampede and need a “recovery” ride.
Black Rock Trail is one of the oldest MTB trails in Central Oregon. The name of the trail is derived from the route around a massive bed of dark lava rock. The trail starts on the east end of the Lava Lands Visitor Center parking lot. Lava Lands Visitor Center is off Hwy 97 south of Bend.
There we will take the singletrack trail on our right. The trail is mostly green with sections of technical lava rock (not difficult rocks to bike through, or very walkable). We will eventually take a right turn detour to a lava field a great viewpoint for the Cascade Range where we will be surrounded by miles of lava.
We will turn around and bike back on this short detour, then turning right to back on the trail. The trail meanders down to the Railroad tracks, and eventually kicks you out on the road near the Benham Falls parking area and pedestrian bridge. There we will head South to Sunriver. This is an out and back ride.
12-15 miles, with options to turn around if we all as a group decide to make the ride shorter.
Elevation: 500-600 feet
Lunch spot after the ride will be MOD Pizza near Market of Choice.
REMEMBER: Bella rides are ‘no-drop’ rides and we are committed to helping one another improve our riding skills. In consideration of other riders, however, we do ask that you choose an ability level that is close to your skills. No one will get left behind unless they choose to cut a ride short, want to go faster than the group or take a different route. All riders have an obligation to the ride coordinator to let her know if they are leaving the ride. Remember that when you leave the group, you are on your own.
******Be sure to bring your signed waivers if you are not a Bella’s member. Non-members are welcome on their first ride without a membership but must sign a waiver and give it to the ride leader before the ride. Please note that this privilege may only be used once – you must become a member before attending your second Bella ride. You can download a waiver here. BEND BELLA CYCLISTS waiver 2019
